Somerville Mayor Endorses Welcoming Massachusetts!

In a meeting with Centro Presente, SCC and Welcome Project leaders yesterday, Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone enthusiastically endorsed the Welcoming Massachusetts campaign. Mayor Curtatone, whose leadership saw the city of Somerville declared as the “best run city in Massachusetts” by Boston Globe Magazine, is also the President of the Conference of Mayors. He plans to encourage his fellow mayors to endorse the Welcoming Massachusetts initiative in the next September meeting.

While doing a little bit of research on Mayor Curtatone, I stumbled across his 2006 inaugural speech which included these words:

“…I’d like to welcome all of the new residents who have come to Somerville in the past two years. We’re honored to have you join our community and we hope you’ll want to stay...”

Ok, so it doesn’t just refer to immigrants (it would be sweet if it did) but it does show Somerville’s hospitality and our hope is that every Mayor and city can be as open and welcoming as Mayor Curtatone and Somerville!
