Closure
Last Wednesday was my final day at the Boston-based Irish Immigration Center (IIC) and it was more sentimental than what I had expected. Here I am, on a short vacation at home and the only topic I want to write about for my first (ever!) blog post was about the IIC.
It was my first job out of college and the decision to leave was hard because it was such an impressive organization with a great mission. It offers a whole range of services- legal, counseling, ESOL instruction etc. and most of these services are offered for free or a low fee. The aim is not only to help immigrants with their legal paperwork, but also to aid them in adjusting well to their new environment. Be it through legal advice, mental health counseling, English instruction or free health check-ups, the IIC evolves by responding to the current needs of the immigrant community. The IIC formed in 1989 serving primarily Irish immigrants but today, 50% of the clients come from over 100 nations. Don’t let the name fool you—everyone is welcome to seek their help.
With the unfortunate news regarding the Education Parity Bill and recent immigration raids, I thought it might be helpful to know where to turn to for help and advice. The staff members are amazing—very sincere and dedicated to their work! I was part of the Development department (fundraising and all that good stuff) and so my position let me observe all the departments of the organization. I learned much about different kinds of public service and how small grassroots organizations like this are much needed in Boston, especially with its large immigrant community.
The Irish Immigration Center is also a part of the Welcoming Massachusetts campaign and its steering committee. Support the IIC by volunteering, making a donation or referring a potential client. And, interns are always welcome.

P.S. In shorter words, it's awesome!
